Things to do in Copenhagen

Copenhagen, Denmark, is not only the capital of the happiest country on Earth, but also an incredibly scenic city, filled with twisting canals lined with beautifully colored buildings. On top of the scenery, the town is bustling with activity from locals and tourists alike. If you ever have the chance to visit this fantastic city, here is a short list of must-sees for the adventurous tourist:

1. Take a stroll down Nyhavn; it’s a must for Copenhagen. It is arguably the best place to hangout waterside in Copenhagen. Restaurants and bars of all types will welcome you in with open arms, but be mindful of the steep pricing of some food and drinks. Though very crowded, Nyhavn is the cultural center of town and provides a very great setting for photos.

2. Tivoli Gardens. Channel your inner child and enter this completely magical and historical amusement park. The park is set in very well-kept gardens on a beautiful lake, and offers amusement for all ages. There are lots of places to eat and drink, all in a very safe environment. Try to plan your visit during the evening, for when they turn the lights on lining the park, it is truly an incredible sight. There are bus stops outside the Gardens that make them very easy to travel to from other parts of town.

3. Around lunch time, consider taking a very cheap ferry or a quick walk to Papirøen, or “Paper Island”. An old paper warehouse converted into a massive center for street food stalls with cuisine from all over the globe. Snacks, main courses, desserts, and drinks are all offered for very reasonable prices. You can enjoy your food next to the water outside on comfortable picnic tables where live music is often played. Paper Island has a very young and hip atmosphere, and is a great visit for any foodie.

4. The Church of Our Savior allows for a free visit inside its beautiful walls. Find the signs leading to the staircase, however, and you can begin a long, steep, trek up the beautiful gold spire and get a wonderful 360 degree view of the entire city, while you also get some good cardio in. Make sure you check with the church’s website for its hours because they often change depending on the time of year. Also, if you are interested in the climb, try to get there early, as the lines get pretty long!

Oooh – this is so interesting. I’ve heard a lot about Nyhavn, and can’t wait to check it out when I travel there this summer! Paper Island sounds amazing too – we’ve just adjusted our schedule so that we can fit in a lazy Sunday boat ride and lunch on the island! Thank you for these tips!! much appreciated
