Seattle, Portland, Olympia, Eugene; these are the cities that come to mind when we think of the Pacific Northwest. The northwestern corner of the United States offers tourists a unique sense of both natural and metropolitan beauty. However, like most places, each has its own set of hidden gems. For the state of Washington, one small town that can easily be labeled as a hidden treasure is that of Port Townsend.
Established in 1851, this small waterfront town still holds onto its old-world charm that attracts boatloads of tourists year round. Offering the best of both worlds, Port Townsend is home to numerous shops and eateries, but also provides tourists with beautiful beaches and easy-to-access hiking. Probably the most memorable aspect of the town is its Victorian architecture paired with quirky details scattered throughout the town. Port Townsend boasts an “old-timey” feel, offering tourists old-school activities like a show at the Rose Theatre, or a burger at the 1950’s-style diner, Nifty Fiftys.
Accustomed to attending to the needs of tourists, Port Townsend offers activities that are fun for people of all ages. The town is home to several bars, restaurants, parks, and shops for kids and adults alike. Although the town’s tourist season peaks in summer with big events like the yearly Lavender Festival, the town is also a popular destination for tourists throughout the year, especially during the Christmas season.
In spite of its small size, Port Townsend is a must-see in the Pacific Northwest. Just a short two hour drive from Seattle or Olympia, it serves as the ideal day trip from many of Washington’s major cities. With ferries connecting to other areas of northwestern Washington as well, Port Townsend serves as the perfect break from the city with plenty to do and see for the whole family.
