Located in the northern part of New York state and 2.5 hours’ drive from Toronto, Rochester is a beautiful and peaceful city with great quality of living, with easy connections between the US and Canada.
What’s more attractive, the University of Rochester—founded in 1850, ranking 34 in 2017 US NEWS as best university, with outstanding academic performance in fields of Music, Optics and Business, and 9 Nobel Prize Winners-including most recently, the Nobel in Economic Science winner Richard Thaler, who completed his master and PhD degrees in UR.
Students who are passionate about studying physics and enjoy studying music will surely find UR to be their dream place.Eastman School of Music is the top music school in the US, and the Institute of Optics is home to breakthrough scientific development. Also, Simon Business School is well known for its business insights, Richard Thaler was once a teaching assistant professor at Simon.
Across all of its schools and campuses, UR enrolls approximately 5,600 undergraduates and 4,600 graduate students. Its 158 buildings house over 200 academic majors. Additionally, Rochester (along with its affiliated Strong Health System) is the largest employer in the Greater Rochester area and the sixth largest employer in New York.
Life in Rochester
Rochester is a city with a wide range of geographic area, but at the same time little public transportation system. People drive to parks for fun or hiking on the weekend, they are spending time hanging out with friends near Niagara Falls, only a 20 minutes’ drive.
Also, Museums downtown are willing to offer great experiences getting to know Kodak and music concerts organized by Eastman School of Music. Together connecting closely to Toronto (as you are supposed to have a Canadian visa), students living in Rochester can have access to researching and studying as well as taking advantage of Metropolitan cities.
University of Rochester is also always happy to hold events for students to get involved in life of UR, with weekly news emails in my inbox, I have full idea of how people are willing to enjoy themselves in such a freezing area like this. We do not live in a big city, but we do spend our life thrillingly as much as people do.
